1984, Pretty much anything by Isaac Asimov, Orson Scott Card was good for a while there before he became horrible, Star of the Guardians is an actually good Margret Weis series, Tom Clancy, Michael Crichton until he got preachy, War of the Worlds, Robert Heinlen likes to write essays, not books, but Starship Troopers and others of his are still awesome, Clarke rules, especially City in the Stars, among others like 2001, 3001, Larry Niven in Building Harlequin's Moon and many others, The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson
